Protecting America’s Agricultural Markets: Agricultural Futures Markets Conference
On April 5th through 6th, 2018, the CFTC will partner with the Kansas State University Center for Risk Management Education and Research to jointly host the first-ever conference for U.S Agricultural Futures Markets. The Agricultural Futures Markets Conference will focus on current macro-economic trends of American agricultural futures markets.
“Kansas State University is pleased to partner with CFTC on this important and timely conference addressing issues affecting market performance, as well as the value of our commodity futures markets in managing risk…the need to effectively manage risk in commodity markets has never been greater, and this conference provides a forum for open dialogue about critical futures market issues.” —Dr. John Floros, Dean of the College of Agriculture and Director of Kansas State University Research and Extension.
The “first-of-its kind” Agricultural Futures Markets Conference is expected to bring participants from federal, state, and local governments including agricultural businesses and scholars to discuss issues affecting the American agricultural markets. Key topics will include risk management for these important markets and protecting its participants form manipulation, fraud, and other deceptive practices that fall within the CFTC jurisdiction.
The U.S agricultural market has a global impact on agricultural futures markets and the agricultural community will have a forum for a range of pertinent topics such as who the market participants are, potential market manipulation, spoofing, and how market participants and consumers can guard themselves against frauds and violations of the Commodity Exchange Act.
CFTC Chairman J. Christopher Giancarlo stated anticipation for the conference that will be held in Overland park, Kansas, citing the Commission’s priority for ensuring regulations do not restrict the financial endeavors of American farmers and ranchers,
“It is both fitting and appropriate to hold our first conference focused on derivatives-markets issues impacting the agricultural community in America’s Heartland. I look forward to this opportunity to join our partner, Kansas State University, to learn more about these vitally important issues and listen to the concerns of this community. One of our main priorities at the CFTC is to ensure regulatory barriers do not stand in the way of long standing hedging practices of American farmers and ranchers, who depend on our markets.”
The Agricultural Futures Markets Conference agenda will be released in February. Participants can register at the Kansas State University website.
